The question of the meaning of intelligent for English‐speaking Lebanese teachers was explored by having twelve teachers rate students in nine classes on eleven scales, including a scale of intelligence. A factor analysis was made of these ratings. It was found that judgements of intelligence covaried with judgements of conscientiousness, thoughtfulness, persistence, and emotional stability, and that such judgements were relatively independent of judgements of cyclothymia and friendliness. The results of this analysis were similar to the results of comparable American studies. This investigation would seem to point up the value of the factor analytic approach to the problem of meaning.
