This paper describes a process for the identification of poor readers as either underachieves or low achievers. Tables of expected reading scores, with accompanying standard errors of prediction, are presented for pupils in Years 3 to 6 (inclusive). These scores were calculated from a sample of 1519 pupils using the regression model with chronological age and Raven's score as the predictor variables and NFER BD reading scores as the reading distribution. Also offered are guidelines to the sensible use of these tables to identify low achieving and underachieving readers.
