S ummary . Youngman's (1979) Behaviour in School Inventory is used as part of a counselling and guidance programme in an Australian secondary school. The sample comprises the complete year 7 intake (12‐ to 13‐year‐olds) of 96 boys and 37 girls. The results demonstrate good convergent and discriminant validity with correlations in the range 0.42 to 0.63 with the objective behavioural adjustment criterion, times sent out of class. It is argued that the BSI self‐rating is particularly effective for girls, and generally superior to teacher ratings of adjustment.
