S ummary . The results of the use of a cognitive preference type of questionnaire for assessing chemistry interests of post‐O‐level students are reported. The two main areas considered were ‘principles’ and ‘applications’. The ‘applications’ area was divided into four subcategories and the results suggest that failure to distinguish between different types of applications leads to false conclusions. The major finding was that students do not distinguish between principles and material which is merely of interest to the academic.
