S ummary . Cattell's Motivation Analysis Test (MAT) is the only published instrument for assessing his comprehensive motivational theory. The homogeneity of the MAT was investigated by classical item analysis, and the 20 scales were found to have uniformly low item‐total correlations. This may explain why a number of attempts to factor analyse the test have given inconsistent results, and suggests that the MAT would require extensive revision before being applied to educational problems in Britain.
