S ummary . Short versions of Vernon's Arithmetic‐Mathematics Test for pupils in the first and second years of secondary school were identified from the difficulty indices of items calculated from a sample of 100 pupils. In an independent sample, scores on ten ‘best items’ showed correlations over +0·90 with scores on the full 65‐item test.
