S ummary . This study describes the procedure and results of a behaviour modification programme carried out in the classroom and aimed at eliminating encopresis in an 8‐year‐old boy. Initially, when the teacher assumed the role of therapist, the programme failed. A nursery nurse was then taught the use of differential reinforcement paired with a time‐out contingency and within one week frequency of soiling decreased dramatically. This level of eliminative behaviour was maintained throughout the rest of the programme.
