S ummary . Following the finding of a general factor in the 11 areas of function covered by the Stott‐Sharp Effectiveness‐Motivation Scale for pre‐school children, five individual tests exploring various aspects of effectiveness motivation were devised. These were applied to two samples of 4‐year‐old children (N=82). All five tests correlated positively with the E‐M Scale, and all except one test correlated with the others at a generally satisfactory level of significance. These results were held to confirm the existence of a motivational factor which has been named effectiveness.
