S ummary . A recent paper by Swift reports correlations between social class and various educational measures, and shows that restricting the range of the social class measure may increase the correlation above that for the whole range. This is contrary to the general expectation of shrinkage described in the statistics text books. This paper shows that this is far from an isolated case, and lists some other examples. The relevance of this phenomenon to experimental design in educational psychology is discussed.
