S ummary . The broad problem of selecting children for remedial reading centres is stated and one of the commonly used criteria for assessing retardation is critically discussed. A rationale is suggested to justify the use of a vocabulary scale as a measure of intelligence in assessing retardation and the results of a survey using such a scale in conjunction with a word reading test are presented. The practical use of the results of this survey as part of a selection procedure within this local authority is described. The problems of reliability and validity are discussed and certain theoretical implications are suggested concerning learning ability in different modalities and its relationship to reading retardation.
