S ummary . In spite of the large number of studies in recent years of problems connected with the processes of reading and with inability to learn to read normally, these problems are still very imperfectly understood. Although they are undoubtedly complex, failure to solve them appears to be due in part to the inadequacy of the methods employed in investigating them. Experimental studies of methods of teaching reading are often not suitably controlled, nor carried out for a sufficient length of time. The various factors associated with different types of reading backwardness are not always properly measured, nor their incidence and frequency assessed in different individual cases. The causal relationship between these factors and reading backwardness remains obscure. In part, these failures may be due to the fact that insufficient attention has been devoted to the nature of the reading processes and of their breakdown in backward readers.
