S ummary . A survey was made of the distinguishable qualities of pupils' compositions, and seventeen qualities were assessed in 230 compositions, both by teachers and non‐teachers. A very similar structure of qualities was observed in all sets of marks. On applying factor analysis, it was found that the qualities could be reduced to four main dimensions: Graphic representation, Language usage, Content and arrangement, and Personal aspects of the content.
