S ummary .— Two of the Gates Reading Tests were administered to 180 children in their first year of the junior school and the results were compared with those obtained from two of Schonell's Tests. In view of a number of advantages such as easier early gradients and greater attractiveness, they are recommended as alternative or additional tests for diagnostic purposes. As the norms of the Gates Word Recognition Test are too easy for English children, an adjustment is suggested.
