Ninety‐two community women were subjects in a multimethod, multidimensional study of assertive behaviour. A standard assertion assessment package was administered to each subject, including self‐report inventories (4), and a behavioural role‐play test (5 observational measures and 3 subjective self‐reports) designed to measure assertive behaviours and related affect. In addition, two scales measuring constructs related to assertion were included. A factor analysis was performed and results indicate four distinct response dimensions: verbal assertion skill, self‐report assertion‐related affect, general social anxiety, and observed assertion‐related affect.
