The performance of hospitalized schizophrenics, subdivided on a paranoid/non‐paranoid dimension, was compared to hospitalized controls on tasks intended to separate the effects of response competition and stimulus complexity. The data tended to provide consistent support for stimulus complexity explanations of performance deficits among schizophrenics, rather than explanations based upon response competition.
