The responses to the items of the Marke‐Nyman Temperament Scale (MNTS) from 163 recovered unipolar depressed patients and 208 controls were analysed by a factor analysis of the matrix of inter‐item correlation coefficients and Varimax rotation. The object of the investigation was to examine how the factors obtained agreed with the three dimensions of personality, Validity, Solidity and Stability, measured by the MNTS, and further to elucidate the definition of these three dimensions. The results were in partial agreement with the existing definitions of Validity, Solidity and Stability but also indicated that the MNTS may measure four dimensions of personality instead of three.
