A formal model of relative similarity judgements is applied to a comparative analysis of the responses of 16 controls, 16 paranoid and 16 non‐paranoid schizophrenics. Each of the parameters in the model is related to theories about schizophrenic thought disorder, and consequent predictions tested. Schizophrenics can be separated from controls in a number of ways that indicate their information handling is impaired. Triadic similarity judgements are shown to be a simple and viable clinical procedure, which with computer facilities support and explicit and detailed link with cognitive psychological theory.
