One hundred and sixty‐five retarded children from six consecutive mental age levels were compared on their responses to the Stroop Test. The retardates showed significant increments in word‐reading and colour‐naming speeds and experienced increased interference with increasing mental age. As contrasted to normals of equivalent mental age, they were slower in changing from a predominantly direct to a verbal mode as evidenced by colour‐naming speed and interference.
