A theory of the development of guilt in terms of learning theory is outlined. Several hypotheses deriving from it, together with some others, were tested by means of a questionnaire. No support was found for the critical hypotheses relating the development of guilt to punishment by the parent highest in affection, and to the mode of punishment employed. Other hypotheses relating self‐ideal discrepancy, approval need and guilt were verified.
