Whilst there is much standardization data on the use of the MFD test with young subjects, there is little information on test performance in the old. This study investigates the effect of age on MFD performance through adult life and also examines the test's effectiveness in discriminating brain damage in the young. The test was found to have two limitations. There are large numbers of false positives if the present norms are applied to a healthy elderly group of volunteer subjects, whilst there are too many false negatives if the test is used with a young brain damaged group.
