The smoking habits of 164 volunteer subjects were related to their knowledge of lung cancer. Non‐smokers and light smokers did not differ in their knowledge. Heavy smokers, however, erred significantly more than non‐smokers in being over‐optimistic about the outcome of lung cancer. The relevance of these findings to present propaganda methods against cigarette smoking is discussed.
