Two groups of alcoholics, one consisting of clinic patients and one of chronic drunkenness offenders, were compared with two groups of nonalcoholic subjects (students and unemployed workers) in respect to their ability to learn to avoid pain‐producing stimuli. S s were set a four choice probability‐learning task in which they were required to select one of four levers on each of 200 trials, each lever being associated with a predetermined probability of producing shock for S or of being correct. S s were also given a battery of personality tests. In comparison to the control groups, the alcoholics secured high scores on the MAS, the N‐scale of the MPI, and the MMPI Pd scale. On the learning task, they gave fewer pain‐avoidance responses.
