The existing evidence concerning the relationship between various psychological factors and inter‐generation occupational mobility is reviewed. The evidence is examined under the headings of: (i) the influence of the family, (ii) the role of intelligence, (iii) achievement motivation, (iv) deferral of gratification, (v) other factors. here is a mass of evidence that the family plays an important role in the mobility process. A number of studies have shown that there are personality differences between occupationally mobile and static people. The review indicates that intelligence, achievement motivation and the deferred gratification pattern are all related to mobility. Other factors which may be significant are social skills, physical characteristics, physical attractiveness and physical, mental and social disabilities. The review also indicates several deficiencies in the research carried out to date.
