An analysis has been made of patient utilization of various psychiatric treatment facilities (out‐patient, day patient and residential) considering only the dimension of time. The findings of the study are consistent with the hypothesis that the distribution of patient utilization of available therapeutic time is a harmonic one. It is suggested that there is a continuum of psychiatric patients whose prognoses (or 'degrees of difficulty') are similarly distributed, and that recovery is a function of therapeutic time and the 'degree of difficulty'.
