The investigation described examines the relationships between achievement motivation, intelligence test scores and performance in the grammar school selection procedures at 11 +. Two methods are adopted to show that achievement motivation, as measured by a content analysis of imaginative stories, is positively associated with the other two types of performance. It is argued that the association with intelligence test scores is indirect and that it is the third variable of success in primary school which is positively associated with each. The empirical evidence supports this interpretation.
