Five experiments were conducted in an attempt to explain the mechanisms underlying disordered motor expression in a catatonic schizophrenic patient. Two main conclusions were suggested by the experimental findings. First, that the motor symptoms were subject to disinhibition by an extraneous stimulus, and secondly that the lack of verbal responsiveness was related to defective verbal‐motor output rather than to disordered sensory input.
