Summary The tube‐in‐tube technique for the functional separation of the lungs in intact anaesthetised adult horses is based on fibre‐optic‐guided left‐sided endobronchial intubation avoiding tracheostomy. It facilitates a valid separation of the two lungs despite variability in bronchial and carinal anatomy. No clinical complications that could be related to its use have been seen.
