Summary The present state of knowledge about embryo transfer and the techniques used in recovering, manipulating and sexing embryos are discussed. Speculation is made about possible future developments, including gene injection and application of recombinant DNA technology. It is concluded that such studies will open up new developments in animal breeding. The end result, however, will still depend on an embryo being transferred to a recipient to carry the pregnancy to term.
