A technique for catheterisation of the coronary sinus in adult ponies ( Equus caballus )

Summary Long‐term catheterisation of the coronary sinus using a specially designed catheter was accomplished in 6 ponies via a right lateral thoracotomy. The catheter comprised a 10 to 12 cm long stiff segment (Teflon) joined to a 100 cm length of pliable medical grade (vinyl) tubing. Catheters were kept functional up to 10 weeks postoperatively. Location ofthe catheter tip was verified by determining the oxygen tension of anaerobically withdrawn blood samples. Normal values of oxygen tension of the coronary sinus blood in ponies were similar to those reported for the dog, whereas oxygen content was significantly lower. Résumé Une cathétérisation de longue durée du sinus coronaire, à l'aide d'un cathéter spécial, fut effectuée sur 6 poneys en utilisant une thoracotomie droite latérale. Le cathéter comportait un segment long de 10 à 12 cm rigide connectéà un tube de vinyl souple de 100 cm de longueur. Les cathéters mis en place furent fonctionnels jusqu'à 10 semaines suivant leur implantation. La localisation de l'extrémité du cathéter fut précisée par la mesure de la tension d'oxygène du sang prélevé anaérobiquement. Les valeurs normales de la tension d'oxygène dans le sang ainsi prélevé dans le sinus coronaire chez les poneys, ont été trouvées semblables à celles constatées chez le chien. Zusammenfassung Langzeitkatheterismus des Coronarsinus wurde mit einem speziell kontruierten Katheter bei 6 Ponies durch eine laterale Thorakotomie rechts durchgeführt. Der Katheter bestand aus einem 10–12 cm langen, steifen Segment, das mit einem biegsamen 100 cm langen Vinylschlauch verbunden war. Die Katheter funktionierten bis zu 10 Wochen post operationem. Die Lokalisation der Katheterspitze wurde überprüft durch die Bestimmung der Sauerstoffspannung in anaerob gewonnenen Proben. Die Normalwerte der Sauerstoffspannung in Coronarsinusblut sind ähnlich wie beim Hund, während der Sauerstoffgehalt erheblich tiefer liegt.
