Fixation of Skin Grafts in the Horse using Stainless Steel Staples

SUMMARY Three horses with a chronic wound on the distal part of a leg were treated successfully by grafting. Small split skin grafts were fixed onto pieces of adhesive tape. The tape pieces were spread over and fixed to the granulation surface with stainless steel staples. A tight pressure bandage including strongly compressed cellular rubber was then applied over the wound. The combination of staple fixation and strong pressure proved effective in immobilising the skin graft. It was stressed that a firm covering of granulation tissue was a prerequisite for success and therefore the technique should not be used for fresh wounds. RÉSUMÉ Trois chevaux présentaient des plaies chroniques à l'extrémité d'un membre et furent traités avec succès à l'aide de greffes cutanées. De petits greffons cutanés furent d'abord collés sur des morceaux de bande adhésive. Ces morceaux adhésifs furent ensuite plaqués sur le tissu de granulation porte greffe et fixés à l'aide d'agrafes en acier inoxydable. Un pansement compressif comprenant une lame de caoutchouc cellulaire, recouvrit le dispositif. La combinaison de l'agrafage et d'une forte pression furent efficaces pour immobiliser les greffons. Il est recommandé de n'utiliser cette technique qu'en présence d'un tissu de granulation, ce qui exclut son emploi sur les plaies récentes. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Bei 3 Pferden mit chronischen Wunden an den Gliedmassenenden konnte eine Transplantationstherapie erfolgreich gestaltet werden. Kleine Spaltlappen wurden auf Klebeband befestigt. Das Band wurde über die granulierende Oberfläche gebreitet und mit rostfreien Stahlklammern befestigt. Anschliessend versorgte man das Bein mit einer starken Druckbandage, in die stark komprimierte Gummizellen eingeschlossen wurden. Die Verbindung von Klammerfixation und starkem Druck in Bezug auf die Immobilisierung des Spaltlappens erwies sich als wirkungsvoll. Es wird unterstrichen, dass eine feste Bedeckung mit Granulationsgewebe Voraussetzung für einen Erfolg darstellt; die Technik sollte bei frischen Wunden nicht angewendet werden.
