Tetralogy of Fallot and Cranial Mesenteric Arteritis in a Foal

SUMMARY A 5 month old colt foal with recurrent pyrexia and a loud pansystolic murmur later developed signs of cardiac failure. Peritoneal fluid and blood samples both demonstrated an extreme leucocytosis and neutrophilia. At post‐mortem both a cranial mesenteric arteritis and the congenital cardiac anomaly, Tetralogy of Fallot were found. The detailed clinical and post‐mortem findings contributing to the case are described. RÉSUMÉ Un poulain de 5 mois présentait un état fébrile récidivant et un souffle pansystolique, compliqué ultérieurement par un syndrome d'insuffisance cardiaque. La cytologic du liquide péritonéal et du sang révéla l'existence d'une hyperleucocytose et d'une neutrophilie. L'autopsie permit de constater une inflammation de l'artère mésentérique craniale et une tétralogie de Fallot. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Ein 5 Monate altes Hengstfohlen mit rekurrierendem Fieber und einem lauten, pansystolischen Geräusch entwickelte später Anzeichen eines Herzversagens. Peritonaealflüssigkeit und Blutproben zeigten eine extreme Leukozytose und Neutrophilie. Bei der Autopsie wurde eine Arteriitis der cranialen Gekröswurzel und eine Fallot'sche Tetralogie festgestellt. Die klinischen und autoptischen Befunde werden im Detail beschrieben.
