SUMMARY A brief historical review is given of the incidence and types of respiratory disease that occurred in Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries. The significance of poor stabling and overcrowding in the causation and spread of coughing is emphasised and its dramatic reduction by simple methods of hygiene and ventilation. RÉSUMÉ On passe rapidement en revue les maladies respiratoires décrites en Grande Bretagne au cours des 18e et 19e siècles. Ceci met en lumière le rôle des mauvaises conditions d'habitat et de la surpopulation tant pour l'apparition que pour la propagation des épizooties. Mais également la spectaculaire amélioration que peuvent apporter des méthodes sérieuses d'hygiène et de ventilation. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Ein kurzer geschichtlicher Ueberblick wird vermittelt über die Häufigkeit und die Arten von Respirationskrankheiten, die in England im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert zu beobachten waren. Die Bedeutung einer schlechten Haltung und einer zu dichten Belegung für das Auftreten und die Verbreitung von Husten wird unterstrichen; die dramatische Reduktion, die durch einfache hygienische und belüftungstechnische Massnahmen erreicht werden kann, wird hervorgehoben.
