Laryngeal Hemiplegia: a Further Look at Haslam's Anomaly of the Left Recurrent Nerve

SUMMARY Variations in the position and gross structure of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve were discovered in five out of a total of 33 thoracic dissections of the structure. In one of the five an accompanying cardiac nerve was also anomalous. Neuropathological changes were associated with the gross variations although there was no evidence of a decrease in the motor function of any of the affected nerves. RÉSUMÉ Des variations dans la position et dans la structure anatomique du nerf laryngé recurrent gauche ont été constatées dans cinq des trente trois cas étudiés. Dans un cas un nerf cardiaque voisin était également anormal. Des variations neuropathologiques correspondaient à ces diversités anatomiques bien qu'on ne puisse en déduire une altération de la fonction motrice des nerfs interessés. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Variationen in Lage und Grob‐Struktur des linken Recurrens wurden in 5 von 33 thorakalen Sektionen gefunden. Bei einem der fünf Fälle stellte sich der begleitende Herznerv als ebenfalls verändert heraus. Neuropathologische Befunde entsprachen den groben Variationen, obgleich sich keine Hinweise auf eine herabgesetzte motorische Funktion der affizierten Nerven finden liessen.
