Lung Function Tests in Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Horses

SUMMARY A number of pulmonary function tests were performed on a group of normal horses and on a group suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Horses with C.O.P.D. were found to have an increased mean inspiratory and expiratory flow rate, a decreased dynamic compliance, a decreased V.i./Max. Δ P.pl. value and elevated values for the effort of breathing. Most of these changes, indicating the obstructive nature of the ventilatory dysfunction, could be normalised temporarily by an intravenous injection of atropine sulphate. Treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics gave rise to clinical healing, and to pulmonary function parameters such as those obtained after the injection of atropine. Although the immediate results were very satisfactory, the symptoms recurred in a large percentage of the horses. RÉSUMÉ Un certain nombre de tests de la fonction pulmonaire a été retenu: tests qui ont été effectués sur un groupe de chevaux normaux et sur un groupe de chevaux souffrant de maladie pulmonaire chronique. Ces derniers montrèrent un débit respiratoire moyen accru tant à l'inspiration qu'à l'expiration, et des valeurs élevées pour l'effort respiratoire. La plupart des changements constatés, significatifs de la nature obstructive du trouble de la ventilation, purent être corrigés par une injection intraveineuse de sulfate d'atropine. Le traitement avec des corticoides et des antibiotiques eut pour conséquence une guérison clinique et l'obtention de paramètres respiratoires tels que ceux obtenus par l'injection d'atropine. Encore que les résultats immédiats aient été satisfaisants, dans un grand nombre de cas on assista à des récidives. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Eine Anzahl von Lungenfunktionsprüfungen wurden bei einer Gruppe gesunder Pferde und einer Gruppe mit chronisch‐obstruktiven Lungenkrankheiten durchgeführt. Pferde mit chronisch‐obstruktiven Leiden zeigen eine erhöhte, durchschnittliche inspiratorische und exspiratorische Durchflussrate, eine herabgesetzte dynamische Compliance, einen verminderten v.i./Max. Δ P.pl.‐Wert und erhöhte Werte für die Atemarbeit. Die meisten dieser Veränderungen, die die obstruktive Natur der Atmungsdysfunktion anzeigen, konnten temporär durch die intravenöse Injektion von Atropinsulfat normalisiert werden. Eine Behandlung mit Corticosteroiden und Antibiotika verursachte eine klinische Heilung und Lungenfunktionsparameter wie nach Atropingabe. Obgleich die erzielten Resultate sehr befriedigend ausfielen, stellte sich bei einem hohen Prozentsatz der Pferde ein Recidiv ein.
