SUMMARY 1. Respiratory distress syndrome is the most important cause of morbidity and mortality among preterm infants, especially those delivered by Caesarian section. 2. The aetiology of this condition and its treatment is briefly discussed. 3. Attention is drawn to the importance of leaving the umbilical circulation intact at delivery until after respiration has become well established. RÉSUMÉ 1. Le syndrome d'insuffisance respiratoire est la cause la plus importante de morbidité et de mortalité chez les enfants prématurés, en particulier ceux nés par Césarienne. 2. L'étiologie et le traitement sont discutés brièvement. 3. On attire l'attention sur la nécessité de respecter la circulation ombilicale lors de l'accouchement jusqu'à ce que la respiration se soit établie normallement. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG 1. Das Syndrom der Atemnot ist die wichtigste Morbiditäts‐ und Mortalitätsursache bei Frühgeborenen Kindern, vor allem der durch Kaiserschnitt entbundenen. 2. Die Aetiologie des Zustandes und seine Behandlung werden gestreift. 3. Gewicht wird darauf gelegt, dass die Nabelzirkulation intakt gelassen werden muss bis die Atmung gut funktioniert.
