Clinical Use of Haloxon * in the Horse

Summary The value of haloxon as an anthelmintic in the horse at 60 and 75 mg./kg. dose levels is shown for 49 animals. A critical anthelmintic test is also given, three ponies having been used. The drug was shown to be in the region of 100% efficient for Parascaris equorum, O. equi adult and immature, Trichonema adult and immature adult, Triodontophorus , and S. vulgaris. The efficiency for S. edentatus , and S. equinus was less satisfactory, and ranged between 25 and 42 per cent. Using the McMaster technique, faecal egg counts from samples of 51 animals showed significant improvement between treated and control animals at the 5th and 21st days following treatment. Continuous weekly dosing at high levels on two ponies produced no ill effects. Résumé La valeur de l'Haloxon comme anthelmintique chez le Cheval à raison de 60 et de 75 mg par kilo est indiquée pour 49 animaux. Un test anthelmintique critique est également rapporté: 3 poneys furent utilisés. Le médicament s'est montré efficace à près de 100% contre Parascaris equorum, contre Oxyaris equi (adultes et formes immatures), contre Trichonema (adultes et immatures, dernier stage), contre Triodontophorus et S. vulgaris. L'efficacité contre S. edentatus et S. equinus s'est révélée moins satisfaisante, de l'odre de 25 à 42%. Par dénombrement des oeufs dans les feces, suivant la technique de MAC MASTER, chez 51 animaux, on a constaté une amélioration significative des animaux traités par rapport aux témoins, entre le 5e jour and le 21e jour suivant le traitement. Die Resultate eines kritischen, anthelmintischen Tests an 3 Ponies werden ebenfalls mitgeteilt. Das Medikament erwies sich als voll wirksam gegen Parascaris equorum, adulte und unreife Oxyuris equi, adulte und unreife Trichonema, Triodontophorus und Strongylus vulgaris. Die Wirksamkeit gegen Strongylus edentatus und Strongylus equinus betrug dagegen nur um 25 bis 42%. Mit der Methode von McMaster zeigten Eizählungen in Kotproben von 51 Tieren signifikante Unterschiede zwischen behandelten und unbehandelten Tieren am 5. und 21. Tag nach der Therapie. La eficiencia en S. edentatus y S. equinus fúe menos satisfactorio variando entre el 25% y 42%. Utilizando la tecnica de MsMaster, los huevos en las heces son contados de muestras en 51 animales mostrando significativo mejoramiento entre los tratados y los animales control al 5o. y 20avo día despúes del tratamiento. No hubo casos de enfermedad en dos ponies continuando el tratamiento con dosis de niveles altos.
