Summary A newborn male foal was diagnosed with a greatly enlarged urinary bladder (megavesica), a urinary bladder diverticulum, and a herniated and abnormal umbilical remnant. Approximately 50% of the cranial bladder including the abnormal structures was surgically resected; the foal recovered and was still asymptomatic 15 months after surgery. The aetiology of megavesica in foals is unknown but successful outcome may be achieved with surgical intervention and adequate medical support.
