SUMMARY • When in doubt isolate sick horses • Healthy in contact horses must be treated as incubators of the disease • Attempt to confirm diagnosis rapidly • Movement of in contact horses almost always spreads the disease • Stop all horse traffic on and off premises • Minimise horse and human traffic on premises • Seek advice on epizootiology of disease if unsure • Minimise contamination by aggressive cleansing and appropriate disinfection • Strictly enforce and monitor isolation protocois • Isolation procedures can be costly but spread of the disease costs much more.
