Although the concept of leadership has been the subject of many business studies, it is a relatively new field in the arena of design. As design begins to take a higher profile in the business world, however, it has become increasingly important for designers to improve their leadership skills. This paper examines various approaches to leadership and assesses key skills and principles of design leadership through the review of published literature and primary interviews with people who occupy leadership positions in graphic design and communication agencies in the UK. Though informed by theory, the outcome of this research is intended to have a practical application within the graphic design community. To this end, a game was developed to help participants evaluate their leadership skills and knowledge and identify training courses that would help them mature as effective leaders. “Prepared for Leadership” takes the form of a tabletop card game; participants select cards and, in three stages, are guided to the continuing professional development course most appropriate to improve their leadership skills.
