This paper attempts to point out the very great importance of the determination of meteor velocities, not only for meteoric problems but also for the wider problems of astronomical evolution. Some of the important published researches are briefly reviewed, and the disagreement between work depending upon human elements and that apparently more purely mechanical is pointed out. The writer hesitates to come to a final verdict as to whether hyperbolic velocities are or are not proved to exist for great numbers of sporadic meteors, and points out the great desirability of further work, using every possible method available.
