The National Council of State Supervisors of Foreign Languages (NCSSFL) has discussed at its recent meetings the role of foreign language instruction in a middle school curriculum. The members of NCSSFL, foreign language consultants with state departments of education, developed the following position statement which was approved at NCSSFL's annual meeting, November 1993, to assist districts as they develop middle school foreign language programs. Questions concerning this statement can be addressed to: Paul Sandrock, NCSSFL President and Foreign Language Consultant, Department of Public Instruction, Madison, WI.
