This article is written primarily for high school teachers. It discusses ways in which foreign literature might be used to achieve cultural and affective goals. It also argues for broad(er) definitions of culture and literature, suggests useful criteria for the selection of literature, and offers strong support for previous publications calling for an experiential—or process‐based approach to the teaching and learning of literature in the high school foreign language class.
