The decision concerning which cultural aspects in literature to discuss can best be made by determining the kind of cultural content it contains, and whether the culture depicted is authentic, aculture, burlesque of culture, or deformation of culture. Preparatory to teaching culture in literature, appropriate goals should be established and necessary background provided. A variety of activities may be utilized to focus on culture while reading the work. Finally, learning outcomes should be assessed in reference to the established goals.
