ABSTRECT Teaching students the skills necessary to translate from one language to another, a tedious process for both students and instructor when restricted to conventional teaching techniques, can become a dynamic learning situation with the help of the computer. In the system described here, the students use a word processor to record their translations of a passage, and the instructor, using a simple computer program, manipulates these translations in order to produce a translation sampler which becomes the basis of class discussion. Each student then edits his or her own translation on the basis of discussion and submits for grading a final draft which reflects the insights gained rather than the initial mistakes.
