Part of building for tomorrow is recognizing the importance of communicating in languages other than our own. But learning a foreign language is not just mastering the traditional four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking; it is also glimpsing the new language in its primary context—living it, and seeing how others live it as well. Foreign travel and speech must occur not only between nations; indeed, strangers within the same nation, even within the same city, must also learn to communicate. In the city of Chicago alone literally hundreds of languages and dialects are being spoken by hundreds of nationalities. The city is the home for nearly a million Hispanics. This article addresses the need and a method for providing students the opportunity to meet this most important minority outside the textbook and to learn to communicate with them.
