After an examination of the difficulties students face in making the transition from skills acquisition courses to the study of literature in college foreign language programs, and a brief review of suggestions offered in other articles that address the problem, this paper proposes the creation of a series of courses that emphasize the continuing development of both functional, communicative skills and analytical tools needed for the study of literature. These courses would be rotated on a threeor four‐year basis, thereby providing students in language departments with limited faculty resources with the option of remaining in this type of course for the duration of their college careers, or advancing to courses that concentrate solely on literary concerns.
