  Reading in foreign language classes is an important source of the comprehensible input that fosters second language acquisition. Available materials, however, do not always encourage reading for meaning. Rather, they invite teachers and students to disregard meaning and concentrate on form. A reexamination of some widely held ideas about reading materials is overdue.
