This survey reflects work done for a task force on language proficiency, a project undertaken for ACTFL by the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching. Information was sought from each state on the current status of language proficiency testing requirements at the state level for persons seeking certification in languages. The results indicate that an increasing number of states are presently requiring tests or considering them for adoption in the near future. In addition, each state was asked to describe its communications network for getting information to the state's language educators. This information helps us know how we may most effectively keep the profession informed as to the developments in teaching and testing for language proficiency.
