Organizing an integrated, cohesive, and meaningful course for the intermediate level of college French is a challenge. The varied composition of most classes, current budget constraints, and the wide spectrum of materials and methodologies can be overwhelmingly difficult to handle. This article explains how traditional materials available to most teachers can be a point of departure for a program which focuses on communicative competence, and suggests ways of incorporating computer programs, slide/sound presentations, and conversational activities into the curriculum in a carefully integrated fashion. Many of the ideas can be adapted to suit most intermediate programs and most foreign languages, with little or no financial investment by the teacher, the student, or the school.
