Language Arts Through Latin: A Staff Development Project

This article describes a staff development project in the Philadelphia School District intended to prepare fourth, fifth, and sixth‐grade classroom teachers and secondary school English teachers to use certain Latin curriculum materials with their classes. The project involves special course work in Latin for teacher participants jointly planned by the Classics departments of two local colleges and the school district. The course work emphasizes the linguistic and cultural content of the curriculum materials including How the Romans Lived and Spoke, Voces de Olympo, and Word Power through Latin. Other aspects of the project involve staff development workshops on methodology, and contact with trained Latin teachers. The evaluation of the project shows a positive effect on the verbal skills of pupils as well as other favorable findings. Some implications of the project are discussed, especially in regard to extending the teaching of Latin through the use of paraclassicists.
